Haiti occupies the western part and is the third among the Island of Hispaniola. It is one of the most mountainous countries in the Caribbean. About ninety-five per cent of its people are descendents of black slaves. This island has a population of 8,300,000 and the main languages the people speak are French Creole and French. The government of Haiti is a semi-presidential republic, where the President is head of the state. Farming is the mainstay of the Haitian economy about sixty-six per cent of the population derives its living exclusively from the land. The religions practiced by the majority of the population are Voodoo and Christianity. Port-au-Prince is Haiti's capital. This city has government buildings, universities, two cathedrals, and the modern hotels, which lure many visitors to this capital. Gourde is the currency of this country. The most extensively extracted mineral resources in Haiti include gold, copper, calcium carbonate, bauxite, and marble, other major industries are textiles, beverages, cement, and edible oil.
