A former British colony, Grenada rises from a rugged coast to a high, forested interior. Its people are of African or mixed origin. Grenada accommodates 98,000 people and is spread over an area of 131 million sq. kilometers. The main language is English and Caribbean dollar is their currency. The capital city of Grenada is Saint George. It is also considered political center of Grenada, and home to its Ceremonial head of state. Agricultural export products include mace, cocoa, vegetables, bananas and other fruits. The Island of Grenada is referred to as the "spice island" because large quantities of mace, cinnamon, cloves, bay leaves, ginger, pepper, and saffron are cultivated in this Island. This island grows about two-thirds of the world’s nutmeg. Thus, Grenada is the second largest producer of nutmeg in the world. Unique cultural events include Grenada Carnival and Carriacou Carnival. This island also offers an abundance of water-based activities, which make them an alluring destination for tourists.
